Electronically assisted voting for New South Wales State By-election for Heffron
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
San Diego, CA - Following the outstanding success of ‘iVote’ electronic voting, provided by Everyone Counts, in both general elections and a by-election last year, the New South Wales (NSW) Electoral Commission in Australia is continuing to offer this service for the upcoming State By-election for Heffron. The iVote online and telephone voting system operates through Everyone Counts’ next generation election and voting system and technology.
The NSW Electoral Commission has made the Everyone Counts system available to voters who are either visually impaired, have other disabilities, are illiterate, are living more than 20km from a polling place, or are outside NSW on election day. The Heffron By-election is for a NSW Parliamentary seat which was recently vacated.
The use of iVote at the elections in March 2011 enabled over 46,000 voters, triple the expected turnout, to cast their ballots via the internet and telephone for the State General Election. Internet voting usage then doubled in the November 2011 NSW Clarence Parliamentary Seat By-election, when the ‘iVote’ online voting platform provided by Everyone Counts was again made available, enfranchising many voters who might not have otherwise had the opportunity to vote.
“Universal access to the ballot is precisely why we innovated to create our eLect® Next Generation Voting System.” said Lori Steele, Chairman and CEO Everyone Counts. “We are honored therefore that the NSW Electoral Commission have again partnered with us to serve voters with disabilities and remote voters.”
The NSW Electoral Commission issued the following Press Release:
1 August 2012
Electronically Assisted Voting for the Heffron State By-election
Applications are now open for iVote registration at the Heffron State By-election to be held Saturday, 25 August 2012.
The iVote system allows eligible people to vote using the telephone or on the internet. iVote is available to people who are blind, vision impaired or with other disabilities, who are illiterate, living more than 20km from a polling place or who are outside NSW on election day.
“People have the right to a secret ballot. This innovation will allow a range of people to vote unassisted”, said Electoral Commissioner Colin Barry.
“The availability of internet voting will also greatly benefit electors who are interstate or overseas on election day”.
Applications will close Wednesday, 22 August at 6pm EST. Registered electors can then vote using the iVote system from 8am EST Monday, 13 August to 6pm EST Friday, 24 August.
